SOCIAL SKILLS CORNER!
We are learning how to use our five senses to make informed decisions. Right now, we are practicing using individual senses.
Also, we are practicing taking deep breaths. We start by breathing in through our nose (smell the flower) and breathing out through our mouth (blow out the candle).
Some days, we practice our game skills. Students are placed in small groups and play a game (with adult support). At this time, students are practicing: waiting their turn, knowing when it is their turn, accepting losing or winning, being a good sport, etc.
Quick tips for handling tough behaviors: 1. Use "first, then" statements. Example: First you need to finish your homework, then you can play on the computer. 2. Put time limits on activities and give reminders as time runs out. 3. For every negative comment, give five positive comments. 4. Do not comment on the tough behavior. Instead, tell them what is expected/what they need to be doing.
